The First Generation:
Being a single mom back in the early '80's I was looking for a way to increase my income. Home sewing had always been a big expense cutter for me. I made clothes for me and my 2 little girls as well as curtains and home decorating projects. The pattern for the animals was offered for sale and reproduction through a magazine. The first ones were for my girls and then as gifts for the many birthday parties little ones attend. The name came naturally as little ones hug them instantly! As word got around the requests started to pour in. The poem was written by a young man who was helping relocate his ill grandmother to a nursing facility. He had requested her favorite colors, a lavender mutt with ears in a lilac pattern. His story of her clutching the mutt to her chest as they settled her in her new room meant a lot to all who heard it. The hug a bunch was expanded to include bunnies, dragons and cats.

The Second Generation:
Growing up I remember watching my mom make hug a mutts for me and my friends. She would let my sister and I stuff the bodies as she would finish one and start another. Once we learned how to stuff the bodies she let us cut out the pattern, which was a big deal for me and my sister. Soon we were sewing ears and then the bodies and mom was stuffing.
